The late Davidson College math professor Rob Whitton was also a music lover, and often turned up wherever local musicians were performing around town. On Saturday, many of those musicians performed during a day-long tribute at Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest in downtown Davidson.
Professor Whitton died last November after he was struck by a car on Concord Road, near Faculty Drive, while walking home from campus. Read the full story

Hansford Epes, Davidson College’s registrar and professor of Humanities and German, is retiring at the end of this school year after an association with the college that has lasted more than 55 years. A 1961 graduate, he was feted the other day at a reception with colleagues. John Syme has this appreciation.

An 18-year-old man was flown by medical helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center-Main on Monday night after receiving a head injury while skateboarding. The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in a cul-de-sac near the Abersham park area, where the man was reportedly “longboarding” with friends.
Three Davidson fire engines carrying a total of eleven volunteers responded to the scene to assist the patient, along with a Medic ambulance and three Davidson police officers. Firefighters assisted with preparing a landing zone for the helicopter nearby. No further details were immediately available. Two people were arrested and at least one person was hospitalized early Sunday after a night of brawling on Davidson College’s Patterson Court fraternity row. The college has released few details, but rumors were running wild on and off campus and on social media, including Twitter where the incident was dubbed #DavidsonRiot. Read the full story

Davidson College’s decision to put off tenure approval for an Asian-American religion professor has sparked an outcry from students and faculty who say it’s the latest sign the college is not meeting its diversity goals.
