Davidson College plans two days of public events, Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 16-17, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. They range from Monday’s King Day for Kids to lectures and discussions to a poetry performance.

Charlotte charity expands to Atlanta, with a Davidson connection
The Spokes Group, an 18-year-old Charlotte charity, annually gives away more than 1,500 bicycles and helmets to disadvantage children through the Salvation Army’s Christmas bureau. Five years ago, the organization expanded to Raleigh. And this year, the tradition expanded to Atlanta.
Like the original Charlotte Spokes Group in 1994, the Atlanta nonprofit has a Davidson connection. Read the full story

The 2011 Red and Black Ball is Friday.
Davidson College’s Warner Hall eating house will host the annual Red and Black Ball on Friday night, its annual fund-raiser for organizations that work on HIV/AIDS treatment and awareness. The gala comes a day after Thursday’s World AIDS Day commemorations. Read the full story

Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel has won it. So has neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sachs. Now add Davidsonian Julio Ramirez to the list. The Davidson College psychology professor recently received the annual “Award for Education” from the national Society for Neuroscience. Read the full story

A showdown between Davidson-based WDAV-FM and National Public Radio over the off-air activities of a program host came to a head Friday when NPR announced it would no longer distribute “World of Opera,” which is produced at WDAV. NPR’s decision came after WDAV refused to fire the program’s host, Lisa Simeone, over her involvement in a Washington, D.C., protest related to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement. WDAV said it would take over distribution next month.
NPR sent an email to member stations Friday saying it would no longer distribute the program. The statement, reported on a blog on the NPR website, said the decision resulted “from different views about the role of a program host.” Read the full story

Renee Zemlock, a UNC Charlotte senior, will speak about her participation on two paleo-Indian sites and one prehistoric site at the Lubbock Lake Landmark in north Texas.

The Central Carolinas Society of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) invites the public to a presentation titled “Tales from the Trenches” on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The presentation will feature five undergraduate students from Davidson and UNC-Charlotte describing their experiences in archaeology this past summer.
There is no charge to attend the presentation, which begins at 7:15 p.m. at The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane. The lecture is one of six public educational programs the local chapter of the AIA plans throughout the 2011-12 academic year. (Schedule below)

Scott Nolan
Scott A. Nolan started work this month as general manager of Davidson-based classical public radio station WDAV-FM, 89.9. In a video interview with DavidsonNews.net, Mr. Nolan called 32-year-old WDAV one of America’s great classical music radio stations, and said he hopes to help it keep the music accessible to a wide audience for another 32 years. He also talked about a favorite piece of music that once “stopped him in his tracks,” and what he sees as his role as the head of a classical public radio station. Read the full story
