A busy weekend awaits music lovers,
with concerts at Davidson College Friday and Saturday, an organ special performance Friday and the Carolina Singers at St. Alban’s Sunday. Plus, there’s a play about cheerleading zealots, and also beer tasting at Summit Coffee, a mill history presentation at Town Hall, a Wildcats swim meet and open houses for both the Village Store and Woodlawn School. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, off Concord Road, will have its annual Christmas Bazaar Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with one-of-a-kind gifts, holiday food, jewelry and a workshop room where children can make special gifts.

It’s family weekend at Davidson College,
and this year the annual event will be highlighted by the inauguration Saturday morning of the college’s 17th president, Tom Ross. The college expects at least 4,000 people to attend, so be prepared for a Wildcat invasion this weekend. Plus, it’s time to buy your pumpkin from the Davidson United Methodist Church pumpkin patch. (St. Alban’s Episcopal Church notice) What do cows, chickens and goats have to do with reading? Children from Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson can tell you. Over the next five weeks they’ll be participating in Heifer International’s Read to Feed program. The more books the students read, the more money they will raise to provide hungry families with farm animals.

It’s a good weekend for having fun in Davidson for a worthy cause. You can eat fish and shrimp with the Methodists to benefit a local Habitat for Humanity construction project. Or you can take your family on a bike ride to raise money for the Davidson Housing Coalition, and then bring them to the village green to join a fun fest benefitting St. Jude’s pediatric center. Too lazy for all that? Then contribute to Gray’s Fact Finders in their walk for Autism. Too energetic to be kept at home? Election 2007 gears up this week with the first local candidate forum, on Thursday night. A fast
organized by Muslim students on Wednesday will help raise money to fight hunger. And events on Friday (at Davidson United Methodist Church) and Saturday (The Ride for Hope & Housing) will raise money for affordable housing. Meanwhile, Davidson College’s Asian Cultural Awareness Association is sponsoring a series of events this week to promote awareness about Asian Culture. They include lectures, films and food. Church members dedicated this cross and cornerstone from the former Lorimer Street Chapel as part of Sunday’s 50th anniversary celebration.
St. Alban’s Episcopal Church has had much to celebrate lately. First the arrival of a new rector, then the debut of a new weekly Saturday evening Celtic service. Sunday the congregation marked 50 years in Davidson. Next week the celebrations will conclude, at least for now, with the official welcoming of the Rev. David Buck and his new associate, the Rev.
