That controlled burn on forest land at the Barger Farm off East Rocky River Road has been postponed. The burn had been planned as part of the farm’s forestry management plan at 11am Thursday. But owner Hugh Barger said at 10:30 that the consultant had called off the plan, because of “not enough wind or wind that is not from the right direction.” Read the full story

HUNTERSVILLE – Central Piedmont Community College’s Huntersville campus off Verhoeff Drive was locked down for about 45 minutes Wednesday morning as police searched the area on foot and with a helicopter after a student thought he saw another student with a gun. If you live in the Lake Norman area you’ve probably noticed this: an increase in the number of passenger jets flying low overhead. Traffic in the area could be affected by the Carolina Half-Ironman Triathlon on Sunday, which starts at the the Davidson College Lake Campus at 7:30am, includes running segments on area roads and at the college cross country trail, and concludes at Bailey Road Park in Cornelius. CONCORD – Local officials and executives from London-based Merlin Entertainments Group broke ground at Concord Mills on Wednesday for the planned $10 million Sea Life Charlotte-Concord. The  36,000 square foot aquarium is expected to open in Spring 2014, with about 5,000 marine creatures on display.  Sea Life will be Merlin’s sixth aquarium around the U.S. Read the full story

As the daughter of a Gettysburg College professor, Laura Rosenbach spent much of her youth knowing that she would one day go into teaching.  With the start of this school year, the lifelong educator – and student – became principal at W.A. Hough High School, a school she says is both larger and more diverse than when it opened in 2010.

She replaced Terri Cockerham, who was promoted to chief human resources officer at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.  Read the full story
