A fire in Huntersville’s Cedarfield neighborhood west of I-77 left a family homeless Saturday afternoon.

Several callers to 911 around 2:14pm reported fire and heavy smoke coming from the house at 9208 Torrence Crossing Drive. The homeowner had recently returned home when he heard a noise upstairs and went to investigate, and found fire in the attic.

Firefighters from stations 1 and 2 responded within 4 minutes, according to a department news release. When they arrived they found smoke coming from the eaves and immediately brought a hose inside the house. Once on the second floor, firefighters opened the attic access door where they were immediately met with heavy smoke and fire. Read the full story

Our first responders in the Lake Norman area do their jobs quietly and professionally, but every once in a while, it’s worth taking time to single out those deserving of special recognition. The Lake Norman Chamber did that Thursday, presenting a series of awards at the eighth annual North Mecklenburg Public Safety Luncheon at the Peninsula Club.

The honors included firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel from around the region, including including Davidson Fire Department Deputy Chief Ryan Monteith and police officer Phil Geiger.

The Hough High boys’ soccer team is sitting atop the MECK 4A conference this week, undefeated in league play (12-0) with double the points of second place Hopewell. The Huskies’ forwards Michael Basnett and C.J. Bradley are a key reason for their success. Bradley transferred this year from Davidson Day School and has helped Hough develop a powerful attack, scoring 21 goals in 19 games.

The Davidson Board of Adjustment on Monday upheld town zoning approval of plans to convert a former single-family house on South Main Street into a home for the start-up Davidson Green School. The split 3-2 vote came at the end of a five-hour meeting at Town Hall that included 4 1/2 hours of testimony and arguments. More than 100 residents packed the town board room for the hearing, which also included town staff, lawyers, reporters and even a court reporter, who dictated testimony into a mouthpiece.
