Fly out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport? Get ready to pay more for premium parking. The airport announced Thursday it will raise rates Feb. 17 for all but Long Term Parking, which will remain $5 a day. Rates for the curbside and Business Valet services and the daily decks, all will go up. Read the full story

Banks Dupree of Boy Scout Troop 72 helped out at the Ada Jenkins Center Loaves & Fishes site during the 2013 drive.
On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Mecklenburg County Council of the Boy Scouts of America will be Scouting for Food. Scouts will go door-to-door throughout Mecklenburg County collecting canned goods for Loaves & Fishes food pantries. Last year’s Scouting for Food drive collected a record 264,000 pounds of food for Loaves & Fishes. Read the full story

Musicians from W.A. Hough High and Bailey Middle schools won spots in the 2014 South Central District Honors Bands during auditions last weekend. They were among more than 2,000 students from a 10-county area vying for seats in four bands – Middle School Concert Band, Middle School Symphonic Band, High School (9/10) Band, and the Senior High School (11/12) Band. HUNTERSVILLE – Winning the North Carolina Regional Future City competition continues to be an annual tradition at J.M. Alexander Middle School. At a competition last Sunday in Raleigh, the team qualified for a trip to the national championships next month with their model, essay and presentation about they futuristic city of “Sollevato.” Read the full story

The cold weather and snow meant a snow day for many in the Lake Norman area, and sent kids to sledding hills and cars skidding along Main streets.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and other area schools are closed Wednesday, over concern for icy roads from the winter storm. Some schools plan classes Saturday. Meanwhile, some government offices are closed or will have delayed openings Wednesday across the area. And Davidson announced a 1-day delay in trash pickups. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools dismissed schools 2 hours early Tuesday because of the threat of snow, and all after-school activities also were canceled, the district said at midday. Meanwhile, we have a list of other cancellations as well. Read the full story

Work is underway on Cannon’s new arts center, off Poplar Tent Road in Concord.
It was the largest fund drive in the private school’s history. Officials said most of the money came from 370 current school families, grandparents, friends, alumni, faculty and staff. Read the full story
