Phillip M. Taylor
Phillip Mitchell Taylor, 51, a resident of the Hudson Place neighborhood, passed away suddenly on Feb. 8, 2009.
Services are planned Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius.
Phillip was born in North Wilkesboro on Jan. 25, 1958, to Madeline Galliher Taylor and the late Steven Mitchell Taylor. He spent his childhood in North Wilkesboro and attended Wilkes Community College and Appalachian State University. Read the full story

A Huntersville-based therapeutic horse riding program is seeking volunteers to help with animal care, horse conditioning, fund-raising and therapeutic riding. We serve adults with traumatic brain injury in a 40 acre setting on Black Farms Road.

Public meeting Feb. 12The Lake Davidson working group will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m. at Davidson Town Hall to discuss the “water-based” portion of the proposed agreement. |
The joint Davidson-Mooresville committee working on possible new rules for Lake Davidson has published a draft cooperation agreement for further discussion and for eventual consideration by the two town boards. As committee members told DavidsonNews.net after a meeting two weeks ago, the proposed 5-year agreement does not include any limits on the size of motor boats on the lake, instead leaving that up to the individual towns. The towns of Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville and Mooresville have picked Carroll Gray, former executive director of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, as executive director of the new Lake Norman Regional Transportation Commission. The towns are forming the commission to help with planning, lobbying and fund-raising for transportation projects affecting north Mecklenburg and south Iredell counties. Read the full story

The Carolina Copperheads baseball team is planning tryouts this month for 9-year-olds and ages 13-18. Tryouts will be Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 14-15 from 4-6 p.m. at the Denver Batting Cage, 2643 N. Highway 16 in Denver. Also, the organization is looking for people to fill paid head coach and assistant coaching positions.
(Updated Thursday, 1/29/09, 7:42 a.m. The Copperheads have changed the tryout time to 4-6 instead of 3-5.)

High winds overnight and throughout the day have brought down tree limbs and utility wires throughout the region. Power was knocked out to homes and businesses in the Exit 30 area, including the Harris Teeter, though it wasn’t clear what caused the outage. The grocery store was operating normally on emergency generators, though employees were covering refrigerated meats and other items as a precaution. Power was expected to be restored by 5 p.m.

Huntersville’s town board will meet tonight (Monday, Jan. 5) for a regular meeting that includes the continuation of a public hearing on a proposed mixed-use development on about 60 acres off N.C. 73 at Davidson-Concord Road. The land is along the Davidson border and within the N.C. 73/Davidson-Concord Road planning area, which Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville jointly studied last year.

Artist Carmella Jarvi will lead a workshop for artists on “Improving Your Chances with Juried Shows” on Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon at Creative Art Exchange in Cornelius.
