The CEO of MI-Connection warns that the Lake Norman-area cable TV network may have to drop Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC from its lineup if the two sides can’t agree on a new contract by Jan. 31. The dispute is over how much MI-Connection will pay the broadcaster to keep carrying its signal.
MI-Connection, which has about 15,000 customers in the Lake Norman area, is in negotiating a new “retransmission consent agreement” with WCNC, Channel 36 (Channel 6 on cable), which is owned by, Texas-based Belo Corp. Read the full story

Revenues rose and expenses fell again during the most recent quarter at MI-Connection Communications System, the local communications network owned by the towns of Davidson and Mooresville. The company also continued to add customers, including users of its new “Warp Speed” internet service.
In a report to MI-Connection’s board Thursday, CEO David Auger said revenues rose 4.2 percent during the three months that ended Dec. 31 (the 2nd quarter of fiscal year 2013) compared with the same period a year earlier. The year-to-year comparison included a one-time miscellaneous gain of $32,000 a year ago. Excluding that, revenues would have risen 5.2 percent, he said. Revenues were flat – up just 0.16 percent – compared with the previous quarter. Read the full story

Jocelyn Desmond
Jocelyn never expressed an interest in being a teacher, but she taught many people lessons they say they’ll never forget.
My daughter would have turned 18 on Jan. 27. I want to share with you the lessons and gifts that others felt she gave in life and in death. But, first, I want to share something I posted a while ago on her Facebook page, a place where many of us gather to remember her:
“It is evident when I read this page how much you are missed, Joc. How terribly big and gaping is the hole left in so many lives. I pray that these words of affection and longing to have you here read as a cautionary tale to anyone feeling alone and desperate enough to do what you did, Jocelyn. NOTHING is solved with suicide. It only spreads the pain around to everyone else. So, I hope no one touched by the love expressed here, and feeling alone in their own lives, romanticizes this or glamorizes it … because, we can all tell you, this grief isn’t pretty or glamorous. And anyone who feels alone should know that she sometimes felt that way, too. But she was wrong. She was only alone in her own mind. Because we all held her in our hearts. Always.”

Cornelius Commissioners on Tuesday added their voices to those questioning the state’s plans to construct toll lanes to help pay for widening I-77 north of Charlotte. In a 4-0 vote, the board approved a resolution asking the Lake Norman Transportation Commission – a regional lobbying group that includes Cornelius – to study how the jammed interstate might be widened with general purpose lanes instead of tolls.

A grass-roots campaign against plans for High Occupancy Toll lanes on I-77 north of Charlotte is gaining momentum, with a vote last week by the Iredell County Board of Commissioners to reject the idea. The citizens group Widen I-77 is celebrating that vote, and plans another strategy session Tuesday night.
