Nine of the 12 fire calls Davidson firefighters handled over the past week were at Davidson College. All were minor incidents or false alarms, including three calls in 12 hours at Rusk Eating House on Patterson Court Circle. Meanwhile, firefighters also responded to a collection of medical calls over the past week. A tally of those calls is below.

Gray Stanback has been drawing since he was 4 – pictures of dinosaurs, flying machines, space aliens. Now 17, he is still fascinated by those subjects and is still drawing them, usually on a magnetic drawing board that he carries everywhere.
Gray is autistic and drawing is a constant activity. “Think of it as a sort of a drainage pump for my brain,” he explained the other day.
Gray is the son of Nancy Popkin and Mark Stanback of Davidson. He was diagnosed with autism at around age 3, shortly after the family moved to Davidson.

North Mecklenburg High School’s interim principal and an assistant principal were suspended this week pending an internal investigation into some concerns that school officials said they cannot discuss. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools said Mike Mathews, the interim principal, and Assistant Principal Joyce Lockhart were placed on administrative leave. Read the full story

As a new school, everything is a first at W.A. Hough High School this year, but so far nothing has been as scary as this: Over Halloween weekend the school’s theater department produced its first dramatic production, “Dracula.” We have photos, plus news of Davidson Day School’s pursuit of a grant to finish its own stage and theater. CHARLOTTE – Developing more sustainable patterns of growth in the Charlotte region will require rethinking everything from the kinds of homes we build and where we build them to how we get around and where we locate groceries and other businesses. Those were among the messages Monday when a new organization called Sustain Charlotte unveiled its manifesto Charlotte 2030: A Sustainable Vision for Our Region.
In a gathering of supporters and local officials at the Square, at Trade and Tryon streets in Charlotte, the group outlined its 10-section plan for making the Charlotte area a greener place to live.
