Your menu of local activities this week includes a variety of performances and literary events. The fall
DavidsonREADS series winds up Tuesday with a talk about author Doug Marlette at Summit Coffee. That’s followed by a concert with Jon Troast. On Thursday, author Tony Abbott talks about his new novel at the library and Davidson’s artist-in-residence Andrew Dunnill discusses his work and the town’s plans for public art at the Davidson College Visual Art Center. Meanwhile, town officials will hold an important workshop and walking tour Saturday about plans to expand Davidson’s historic district. And the Beggar Boys (photo) perform Celtic Christmas music Saturday and Sunday at St. Alban’s. Read the full story

Andrew Dunnill, artist-in-residence
for the Town of Davidson’s Public Art Task Force, will give a free lecture about public art and his own monumental cast iron and steel sculpture on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at Davidson College Visual Art Center, Main and Griffith streets. The event also will include a reception, where Mr. Dunnill (photo) will meet residents and discuss plans for public art in Davidson. Read the full story

The Public Art Task Force, which has been meeting to set up a permanent public art program in town, has named Andrew Dunnill as Davidson’s first artist-in-residence. Mr. Dunnill, an associate professor of sculpture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is known for monumental cast iron and steel sculptures.

The Town Board on Tuesday approved the appointment of a nine-member Task Force for Public Art in Davidson, which will be charged with setting up a new public art commission and developing the town’s first artist-in-residence program. Read the full story
