Davidson Community Players’ production of “Crazy for You,” a Tony Award-winning Gershwin musical filled with familiar tunes, opens Thursday, June 21, and runs through Saturday, June 30, at Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College. The bluegrass folk rock band Cast Iron Filter was a favorite on concert circuit in Charlotte and across the Southeast in the late 1990s and early 2000s before its breakup in 2004. This weekend the band returns to its old haunt, the Visulite Theater in Charlotte, and to Summit Coffee in Davidson, as part of weeklong reunion. Details below.

A decade ago Cast Iron Filter was having the kind of success most young bands dream about. Founded in 1998 by students at Davidson College, the group was making records and doing national tours. Within a few years, the band had a manager in Atlanta and reviews in major newspapers. Its revved-up bluegrass/Americana sound even earned its own nickname – “Irongrass.” Read the full story

Davidson is in the midst of revising its planning rules to allow for wall murals downtown, and the first one could show up on the south wall of the building that houses Summit Coffee. But that project, announced at the May 22 Town Board meeting, is still just an idea and faces a variety of hurdles, from funding to design approval. Read the full story

Some listeners of Davidson-based WDAV-FM could lose their signal for up to a month while the classical music public radio station uses a backup antenna so it can repair damage on its main antenna.
The damage was unexpected and spectacular: A recent tower inspection found a section of the antenna glowing orange from heat. General Manager Scott Nolan said Tuesday engineers aren’t sure what’s causing the heat. They won’t know more until they dismantle the antenna this week. Read the full story

Ground was broken Saturday for the town’s second major public art project, a $110,000 “book garden” on Main Street, in the area between the CVS pharmacy and the west porch of the Davidson library. Town officials, members of the public art commission and citizens who helped make project possible hoisted shovels during a 10 a.m. ceremony under the big oak on the site. Read the full story
