“No Kidding! Around Davidson has a new correspondent – Pat Shaw!”
A recent note from former Davidsonian Laurie Dennis reminded me that I have almost hit the “500 mark” of Around Davidson postings. Maybe a good time to think about cutting back to writing once a week and finding a “partner” to cover the other day. Requirements? Pen, paper, camera, curiosity and the “ability to talk to a fence post” as some might say.
Someone able to do all the above is PAT SHAW who joins Around Davidson with her first Tuesday column today. Pat is smart, savvy, decades younger and involved in Davidson activities I know little about. Together we can cover a lot more town events – so fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride! I’ll be back on Thursdays. Yours, Brenda Read the full story

Hello Spring? We sure hope so!

Will March come in like a lion? Or like a lamb? With the beautiful pink blossoms appearing on ornamental trees around town and the forecast for sunshine with cold temperatures for the start of March, we would have to compromise and say that the month is “coming in like a cold lamb for us and a “cold lion for the NC Mountains!”
Today Around Davidson has a reminder about Women’s Basketball at Davidson College, a visit with new Pines’ residents, Priscilla and Tom Perkins, and an interview with Judy Gregory, an artist who creates memorable pieces using tea bags and a Noteworthy Note about a permaculture workshop this weekend. A squirrel-proof feeder makes leisurely dining for area chickadees

We are almost to the end of February and awaiting word if March will come in like a lion! The sunshine and warm temperatures of last Sunday were a wonderful precursor of spring. We can’t wait! The trees are budding, the daffodils are blooming and we see so many birds picking over the sunflower seeds at our feeders.
Today Around Davidson focuses on youth of Davidson. We hear about a new baby for Aleyna Edmunds and Kevin Brady, a television interview with Ulysses Jackson and a trip report from Scouts in Venture Crew 58. Read the full story

Hello snow! What a surprise our mini-blizzard was this past Saturday afternoon turning Davidson into a winter wonderland – if only for the afternoon and evening hours. Now we are back to normal with our 50 degree highs and our heat pumps can get a little rest.
Around Davidson has news today of piano honors for Clara Gerdes, academic honors for Lory Morrow and an inside look at Gentle Yoga with Christina Natichioni. Read the full story

It’s Valentine’s Day! We wish all of our readers a wonderful day! It doesn’t seem quite right that all the hype about Valentine roses should cause the price for a dozen stems to skyrocket – but guess that is what free enterprise is all about. However, should roses and chocolates not entice you to spend the “big bucks,” Around Davidson has the answer for you today.
As is our tradition, this Valentine column visits with the Bruce Smith family but also introduces you to a new Winestore whose offerings would make any Valentine smile – with less damage to your wallet! In addition you will find a Noteworthy Note from Cynthia Lawing. Read the full story

Snow, sunshine, snowshoes – a winning combination in Connecticut!

New Orleans will be humming today as thousands celebrate Mardi Gras in that city. Also known as Fat Tuesday, it is the last day of feasting and partying before the beginning of Lent tomorrow. Today is also the birthday of Abraham Lincoln which carries even more weight this year due to all the Oscar buzz about Daniel Day Lewis playing Abraham Lincoln in the movie, “Lincoln.”
This Tuesday Around Davidson has a word about chocolate, a note about Patrick Griffeth’s Eagle project, a visit with former residents Nancy and John Griffith, some “serious snow” scenes and a Noteworthy Note about tomorrow’s Benefit at Davidson College. Read the full story

HAMMERS. Souper Bowl. Winning entry from the Brickhouse. Yes, our readers probably read quite a bit about last Saturday’s event in the Lilly Gallery at Davidson College to raise money for the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS home repair program. DavidsonNews.net Editor David Boraks took many photos of people enjoying their “souper” lunch. (See “Souper Bowl: Brickhouse wins with Creamy Chicken”)
This week Around Davidson was the recipient of a wonderfully written recap of the Souper Bowl from Davidson Housing Coalition President Margo Williams, which we want to share with our readers. But first let’s talk about the organizations that hosted the occasion: Davidson Housing Coalition and HAMMERS. Many newcomers to our area might want to know about the histories of these organizations and consider giving some of their time, talent or resources to these organizations. Read the full story
