Thieves continued to be a problem for local construction sites this week when an unknown suspect stole over $3,300 worth of copper tubing from inside of three houses in the Summers Walk neighborhood. Unknown suspects broke into a business on North Harbor Place and stole over $1,100 worth of cash and electronics, and someone used a Lakeview Avenue victim’s social security number to open numerous accounts with a power company in Connecticut.

Firefighters investigated a number of smoke scares this week, including one on a boat that was determined to be coming from the vessel’s battery compartment. The battery had melted, burning electrical wires and parts of the compartment surrounding it. Also this week, a passing vehicle with a tall profile pulled down telephone and cable lines from a utility pole on Jetton Street. Police officers and town maintenance personnel closed the street until technicians could respond to repair the damage. Davidson police had an unusually busy week, responding to a bank robbery on Main Street and wreck on Shearers Road that caused a power outage in part of town. Thieves stole $1,200 worth of copper tubing from a construction site, and several Torrence Circle residents reported being assaulted by someone they know. Davidson firefighters assisted local departments with emergencies over the past week, including a structure fire in Mount Mourne and an odor of smoke inside a Cornelius home. A vehicle overturned on N.C. 73 during a rainstorm last Thursday, damaging a utility pole. No injuries were reported. Police investigated several thefts over the past week, including one from the CVS pharmacy on Main Street and another at Harris Teeter. Suspects stole around $25 worth of items in both instances. Two buildings at the Metrolina Warehouse off Depot Street were vandalized with spray paint, and a 20-year-old driver was charged with DWI after he drove through a police checkpoint on Griffith Street. Firefighters investigated a number of smoke scares over the past two weeks, including one outside the Carnegie Guest House at Davidson College whose source was not determined and one case of burnt toast at The Pines. Engine 1 assisted Odell firefighters with an outside fire on Davidson Road, and a homeowner graciously extinguished an outside fire with a garden hose after emergency personnel advised that burning yard waste is illegal in Mecklenburg County. Police investigated several vandalism cases over the past two weeks, including one in which an unknown suspect shot paint balls at the Fuel Pizza restaurant, damaging one window. Distracted driving accounted for at least two rear-end collisions on local roads, and two drivers had to be recalled to accident scenes after they left before police arrived. Deer also continue to be a problem for motorists. Meanwhile, a statewide “No Need 2 Speed” campaign started this week and Huntersville police announced an arrest in a statutory rape case. Firefighters responded to a number of smoke scares last week, including one in which smoke from an oven set to “clean” mode triggered a smoke detector but failed to start a fire. A malfunctioning HVAC unit caused an odor of an electrical fire inside of a residence on Poetry Lane, and an odor of natural gas from a stove that failed to ignite prompted an emergency response, as well.
