Davidson Cornelius Child Development Center has a new director. Elizabeth “Libby” Johnston has taken over from Courtenay O’Neil, who left for a job in Wisconsin, and to be closer to her family.
O’Neil oversaw the child care center on Gamble Street, on Davidson’s West Side, as it rebounded from near collapse several years ago because of financial troubles. The former Davidson-Cornelius Day Care now has a five-star rating and has added new services, including after-school, bilingual and infant care.
Johnston has worked in early child development training and administration for about 25 years, running two child care centers in the Lake Norman area, working for the Children’s Developmental Service Agency for Iredell and Cabarrus Counties as a Community Rehabilitative Specialist, and working for the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children as the Regional Behavior Specialist. She most recently worked as Strengthening Families Coordinator at Barium Springs Family and Child Development Center.
“Libby brings not only outstanding credentials and a wealth of experience in early child development, but also extensive teacher and parent training as well as center licensing assessment expertise,” Ellen Donaldson, the day care’s board president, said in a press release. “Her passion for teaching and caring for children and supporting their parents and families is palpable!”
Added Chris Woodhouse, the former board of directors president: “The timing could not have worked out better, since Libby came on board as our new Director within a week of Courtenay’s departure – we didn’t miss a beat.”
The center describes itself this way:
The Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center is the only 5-star, full-time, bilingual child development center in the North Mecklenburg area that serves all families of our communities without regard for ethnicity or income level. Through the grace and generosity of local citizens and businesses, the Center provides scholarships for many children whose families would not otherwise be able to afford high-quality, safe, child care.
