A man driving a black SUV struck a power pole on Shearers Road in Davidson around 6:15pm Saturday night, knocking down power lines and cutting power for homes in the area, including parts of River Run. Energy United was telling customers it could be the middle of the night before power is restored.
Witnesses said the man may have lost consciousness before he struck the pole. Emergency workers on the scene said he had injuries related to the impact, and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Another driver about 50 yards away was trapped for about an hour by power lines that fell on her convertible. At around 7:15pm, an Energy United worker moved power lines so she could get out of the car.
The woman, who lives a few houses down on Shearers Road, had just pulled out of her driveway on the way to work when the wreck happened. “The black SUV crossed the center line and hit the pole and knocked down the lines,” she said.
Her daughter, who lives in another house nearby, said she heard the crash, and looked out her window. “The power lines were arcing and all I could see was the power lines coming down,” she said.
At 8:30pm, Energy United reported 414 customers were without power.
