A big crowd of runners and spectators is expected in downtown Davidson Saturday night for the second annual Summit Coffee Leprechaun Loop 8K road race and post-race festival. Organizers said 550 runners had signed up by Thursday night, and the total could top 700 by race time, at 6pm Saturday.
A year ago, Olympian Anthony Famiglietti sped to victory over 235 runners in the inaugural Leprechaun Loop, which follows streets and greenways around town.
The race is the first of the season, in the Main Street coffee shop’s Summit Twilight Racing Series. Four races are planned. The Leprechaun Loop is a fundraiser for Levine Children’s Hospital. Other races will be on June 8 (4 miles), Sept. 14 (5K/10K/1-mile fun run) and Nov. 23 (5K). All events start and finish at Summit Coffee, at 128 S. Main St., Davidson.
LEPRECHAUN LOOP SCHEDULE
Online registration for the Leprechaun Loop has closed. In-person signups are possible Friday, March 15, 10am to 3pm at Charlotte Running Co., Mooresville, and at Summit Coffee, 5 to 9pm, where they’ll be having a packet pickup party. You also may register on race day, Saturday, March 16, at Summit Coffee, 4:30pm to race start.
Residents may want to watch out for brief road closings. The race begins at 6pm at the starting line on Jackson Street, follows a route over to Griffith Street and around the West Side, then back across Main Street to South Street and the Southeast Greenway. It finishes up on South Street, near Flatiron Kitchen.
Charlotte-based band The New Familiars will headline the post-race festival, which includes food trucks and drinks.
