The piano duo of Hannah Wang of Charlotte and Clara Gerdes of Davidson brought back the big prize this week from a national competition in Anaheim, Calif.
Less than a month ago we featured the 16-year-old pianists after their first-place showing in a regional Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Piano Duet competition. That earned them a trip to compete at last weekend’s national championship in California.
The dynamic duo returned Tuesday, bringing home first place honors. Playing their audition pieces by Hindemith and Mendelssohn, Clara and Hannah placed first among the competitors in the MTNA Senior Piano Duet Finals held on Sunday, March 10.
The victory won them a cash award from the longtime sponsors, the husband/wife piano duo Dallas Weekley and Nancy Arganbright.
Clara, the oldest daughter of Philipp and Mary Womble Gerdes of Davidson, studied piano with Davidsonian Cynthia Lawing for more than seven years. Dr. Paul Nitsch, who teaches with the Queens University of Charlotte Music Academy, is now her piano teacher, while Jane Cain of Davidson continues to instruct Clara in organ.
Hannah is the daughter of Qing Ming Chen and Guqi Wang, of Charlotte. She also studies with Dr. Nitsch.
These talented young ladies enjoy duo piano and hope to continue playing and competing.
Congratulations to Clara and Hannah and their families. What a wonderful honor!
