Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville is celebrating a milestone this month, as a fifth generation enters the family-run business. Jonathan Kepner recently joined the funeral home, doing what his father, grandfather and others generations before him have done.
The Kepner family has been in the area for about two years, since buying the former Raymer Funeral Home in 2011. The company was founded and operates other funeral homes in Wheeling, W.Va.
In an announcement last week, the funeral home said Mr. Kepner has followed in the footsteps of his father, uncle, grandfather, and generations before him. He’s the son of John and Claudia Kepner, who moved from West Virginia to take over the Raymer Funeral Home.
“It’s a perfect fit for me. I have great respect for my father, so it’s easy to take direction from him. He’s a leader in his church, in our community, and most importantly, a role model to me as a person,” he said.
Jonathan was born and raised in Wheeling. He graduated from Linsly School and attended West Virginia University, where he graduated in 2010 with a degree in Athletic Coaching Education. (He hopes to get involved in youth sports in the Lake Norman area.) He went on to graduate from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in January 2012. After state and national exams, he now holds Funeral Director & Embalmer licenses in North Carolina and West Virginia.
At the funeral home, he’ll also be in charge of the new crematory installed last fall.
