DavidsonLearns, the “lifelong learning” program in Davidson, is accepting registration for two new courses: Rabbi Michael Shields of Davidson’s Temple Kol Tikvah will teach a course beginning in February on “Critical Issues for Jewish Christian Relations.” Meanwhile, poet and Davidson College Professor Emeritus Tony Abbott will lead another session of his popular poetry writing class. Details below.
CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURE AND THE JEWS: CRITICAL ISSUES FOR JEWISH-CHRISTIAN RELATIONS TODAY
Rabbi Michael Shields will lead this course on the parting of the ways between Judaism and Christianity. He’ll look at the socio-political realities underlying writings by Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, including their portrayal of Judaism’s leaders and institutions, Jesus’ birth, ministry and teachings, his relations with Jews and Gentiles, and his trial and execution. The course also will examine the interrelation of Jewish, Christian and Roman history of first century Palestine and Asia Minor. Specific discussion topics may include: Is the New Testament “anti-Semitic”? Jews and the trial of Jesus. Was the Last Supper a Passover Seder? Righting what’s wrong with church “Seders.” The course traces the origins of the Christmas and Easter stories, the Passion and Jews in drama and film. Limited to 25 students.
Time: Friday mornings, 10-11:30am
Dates: Feb 8, 15, 22; Mar 1, 8
This five-week workshop with Professor Emeritus Tony Abbott is open to those students who took Beginning Poetry in the fall, and to others who have had some experience in the writing and publication of poetry. The text for the class will be “Otherwise: New & Selected Poems” by Jane Kenyon, which is readily available on Amazon in both new and used versions. We will divide class time between the study of Jane Kenyon’s poetry and the reading and analysis of your poems. You should be prepared to bring a poem to class each week. This course has a maximum enrollment of 10 students.
Time: Thursday evenings 7-9pm
Dates: February 21, 28, and March 7, 14, and 21.
