On Wednesday night, Davidson College’s technology services chief sent an email to the college community reporting service on the college network had been restored around 6:30pm.

Davidson College’s campus-wide computer network went down, email was knocked out and the Davidson College website was offline for several hours Wednesday afternoon. A college spokesman confirmed the outage around 4:40pm, saying officials haven’t given an estimate for when it might return.

The network failure spawned a flurry of messages on Twitter, a service staff and students could use on their smartphones with alternate connections.  The situation quickly got its own  hashtag #DavidsonNetworkDown.

“You can’t do anything without the Internet and there’s no Internet to distract me from the lack of Internet,” said one witty Twitter user.

“Interwebs is busted,” another college employee said, in a text message to DavidosnNews.net world headquarters.

Said another user: “You don’t realize how much we depend on technology until something like this happens.”

The college spokesman said Wednesday afternoon the experts “were huddled around” working on the problem. He said they couldn’t tell him when they’d have the network back up and running.
