Bailey Middle School sixth grader Lindsay Greene is on a spelling winning streak. The Davidson resident outlasted five other contestants for 18 rounds Wednesday to win the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools district spelling bee, at the Mint Museum on Randolph Road in Charlotte.
Her winning word: “dubiously.”
Lindsay is the daughter of Gretchen and Brian Greene, and lives in Davidson’s McConnell neighborhood. She’s a girl of few words, and afterward said only that it felt “awesome.”
Her parents were ecstatic. “She’s worked hard. I can’t believe it,” her dad said. “Very exciting,” said her mom.
Lindsay had advanced to the district bee with a December victory at the Northeast regional spelling bee.
In Wednesday’s competition, Lindsay admitted she was nervous as she faced five other regional winners from within CMS. “A couple of people got out pretty quickly,” she said.
Lindsay actually had an earlier chance to win the title, when she was handed the word “cubit.” But she misspelled it, sending the competition on to what turned out to be four more rounds, according to Mr. Greene, who is Lindsay’s coach.
Finally, opportunity knocked again. The battle was down to Lindsay and Madison Burkardt, of McClintock Middle School in Charlotte. She missed “mosquitoey,” giving Lindsay another chance to win.
That’s when “dubiously” came up for the Bailey Middle schooler, and she spelled it right.
“Sometimes it’s the luck of the draw,” Mr. Greene said. And hard work. Lindsay said last month after winning the Northeast Zone that she and her dad practice at least an hour a night.
There’s more of that ahead. Lindsay moves on to represent CMS at the regional Charlotte Observer spelling bee Feb. 11 at Imaginon in Charlotte. There, she’ll face the best spellers from throughout the region.
She said she didn’t think she’d get this far in the competition. But she acknoweldged that her success came “because I studied.”

CORRECTION: We … er … misspelled the word that Lindsay missed before her win. it was “cubit,” not “qubit.” Blame it on the cell phone interview Wednesday night.
