A big crowd surrounded Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson Friday night for the 1st Summit Solstice Race + Festival, a road race and post-race festival that included a reunion performance by Davidson band Cast Iron Filter.

Two-time U.S. Olympian Anthony Famigilietti easily won the 4-mile run on Davidson streets and the Davidson College cross country course. The race was was a fundraiser for Our Towns Habitat for Humanity and the second the 2012 Summit Twilight Racing Series, four evening runs benefiting various local and national charitable organizations. Cast Iron Filter, which formed at Davidson College in 1998 and toured the country playing Irongrass (bluegrass meets rock ‘n roll) until 2004, regrouped for an outdoor concert at the post-race festival at Summit Coffee. Cast Iron Filter includes lead singer/songwriter Dustin Edge, mandolin player Michael Orlando, bassist Mason Bisset and drummer Tim Helfrich, who also is proprietor of Summit Coffee.
New Belgium Brewing Co. and New Balance are sponsors of the Summit series. Future races include: Aug. 31, 2012 – 10K race + 1-mile fun run; and Nov. 16, 2012 – 5K benefiting Movember.
