Updated Dec. 15
From Naramore to North Main and Winged Oak to North Downing, thousands of luminaria lined the streets and sidewalks of Davidson Saturday night in the annual Noel for Neighbors fund-raiser for Davidson Housing Coalition. The candle-lit displays raised more than $16,500 for the organization, which provides affordable housing and home ownership education programs.
A tour of town Saturday night found luminaria in early every neighborhood, from old Davidson to Lake Davidson Park, and McConnell to River Run. Davidson Housing Coalition said more than 450 families participated. In River Run, organizers expected around 200 homes to participate this year. By comparison, last year throughout town, there were only a total of 304.
Perhaps the best turnout in town may have been on Rollingale Lane, off Dembridge Drive, where there appeared to be near 100 percent participation.
And joining in for the first time this year was the Davidson Pointe neighborhood, off Bridges Farm Road on Lake Davidson, across the Iredell County line, where 16 homes had displays, according to residents.
It was the 11th year for the event, which started in the McConnell neighborhood residents who wanted to celebrate and help a good cause. The original celebration expanded to the St. Alban’s community, and last year Davidson Housing Coalition and dozens of volunteers helped spread it across town.
Organizers this week said they were hoping to beat last year’s record of more than $11,000 raised. For a donation, interested residents received sets of luminaria. Scouts from Davidson Troop 58 helped assemble packages of bags, candles and sand this week.
