Firefighters help with auto accidents, alarms at college

Firefighters assisted police with a number of vehicle accidents over the past two weeks, including two incidents involving deer and one versus a parked car on Concord Road. Kitchen fires and the cross-town power outage on Nov. 14 (“Power outage hits Cornelius & Davidson; 3 schools closed”) kept emergency responders on the road, as did a number of false alarms resulting from construction projects on the Davidson College campus. Details on these calls and others (along with a tally of the past two weeks’ medical calls) may be found below.

FIRE REPORTS

SATURDAY, NOV. 5, 9:22 a.m., I-77 at Exit 31 – Engine 3 and Engine 4 were cancelled by the Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department while responding to assist Iredell County firefighters with a tractor trailer fire.

SATURDAY, NOV. 5, 6:22 p.m., 200 Baker Drive, Baker Sports Complex, Davidson College – Rescue 14 provided an EMS standby for the Davidson College Wildcats vs. Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears basketball game.

SATURDAY, NOV. 5, 10:27 p.m., 108 Nelson Lane, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Davidson College – Engine 3, Ladder 1, and Rescue 14 investigated a fire alarm activation and found that fraternity brothers had accidentally triggered a kitchen smoke detector while making pancakes. Firefighters quickly reset the alarm system and cleared the scene without incident.

TUESDAY, NOV. 8, 8:48 a.m., 21300 Davidson Street,  YMCA, Cornelius – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 were canceled while responding to a fire alarm with the Cornelius Fire Department.

THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 10:48 p.m., Northwest Drive – Engine 3 responded to a motor vehicle collision.

FRIDAY, NOV. 11, 6:50 p.m., Patterson Court Circle, Davidson College – Engine 3 stood by at an authorized bonfire and successfully extinguished the fire without incident at the conclusion of the event.

FRIDAY, NOV. 11, 7:04 p.m., 200 Baker Drive, Baker Sports Complex, Davidson College – Rescue 8 provided an EMS standby for the Davidson College Wildcats basketball game.

SATURDAY, NOV. 12, 2:28 p.m., 20815 Sterling Bay Lane, Cornelius – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 responded to a cooking fire and found that the fire had been contained to the stove. Firefighters helped clear the apartment of smoke.

SATURDAY, NOV. 12, 7:03 p.m., Concord Road at Faculty Drive – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 assisted police with a motor vehicle collision in which a Davidson man driving a 2007 Dodge rear-ended a Davidson woman’s 2004 Toyota that was parked facing west. No injuries were reported.

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 1:33 a.m., 20214 North Main Street, Cornelius – Davidson firefighters stood by at the fire station after hearing multiple calls reporting an explosion in Cornelius related to the power outage that struck both towns. Details on the power outage: “Power outage hits Cornelius & Davidson; 3 schools closed”

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 1:33 a.m., 400 Avinger Lane – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 investigated a fire alarm activation caused by the cross-town power outage. No hazards were found and all Davidson units cleared the scene without incident.

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 1:33 a.m., 1118 South Street, Cornelius – The Cornelius Fire Department asked Davidson firefighters to standby at the Davidson Fire Department in response to a heightened number of calls in Cornelius related to the cross-town power outage.

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 9:27 a.m., 9807 Forsberg Court, Cornelius – Engine 3 was canceled by the incident commander while responding to a fire alarm activation with the Cornelius Fire Department.

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 7:20 p.m., 200 Baker Drive, Belk Arena – Rescue 8 provided an EMS standby for the Davidson College Wildcats basketball game.

MONDAY, NOV. 14, 9:26 p.m., 20419 Sterling Bay Lane, Cornelius – Engine 3 and Rescue 14 stood by on the scene of an electrical hazard with the Cornelius Fire Department before being cancelled by the incident commander.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 1:10 p.m., 133 Glasgow Street, Tomlinson Dormitory, Davidson College – Engine 3 and Rescue 8 investigated a fire alarm activation and found that construction workers making a hole in a block wall created a cloud of dust that triggered a smoke detector. Firefighters reset the buildings alarm and established a fire watch schedule with Davidson College Campus Police until the end of the workday.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 1:56 p.m., 439 North Main Street, Davidson College Eco House – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 investigated a fire alarm activation and found that a smoke detector had been triggered by burnt toast. Firefighters quickly reset the alarm and cleared the scene.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 2:30 p.m., 126 Patterson Court Circle, Kappa Sigma Fraternity House, Davidson College – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 investigated a fire alarm activation and found water leaking from an activated smoke detector. Firefighters alerted the Davidson College Physical Plant after resetting the alarm.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 3:10 p.m., 409 Ridge Road, Apartment Complex “F,” Davidson College – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 investigated a fire alarm activation and found that the system had malfunctioned after maintenance personnel repaired several holes in the alarm area’s ceiling. Firefighters advised Davidson College Physical Plant after resetting the alarm.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 4:40 p.m., 409 Ridge Road, Apartment Complex “F,” Davidson College – Engine 3 investigated another alarm activation at the same address and spoke with a Davidson College Physical Plant representative who agreed to establish a fire watch until the alarm system could be repaired.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16, 5:38 p.m., 104 Nelson Lane, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity House, Davidson College -Engine 3 and Ladder 1 investigated a fire alarm activation and found that a kitchen smoke detector had been triggered by bread that fell against an oven’s heating element. Firefighters helped ventilate the building and reset the alarm system without incident.

 THURSDAY, NOV. 17, 8:15 a.m., Potts Street – Engine 3 and Ladder 1 assisted police and a Medic unit with a motor vehicle collision involving a deer.

THURSDAY, NOV. 17, 3:29 p.m., 260 South Main Street, McKay Youth House, Davidson United Methodist Church – Engine 3 investigated a fire alarm and found that a smoke detector had been triggered by sheetrock dust from a construction project.
