The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a flash flood warning for Cornelius, Davidson and surrounding areas until 12:30 p.m.
The doppler radar at 9:29 a.m. indicated heavy rainfall – 1 to 11/2 inches per hour – across Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties, southern Iredell County, western Union County, Rowan County and eastern York county in South Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service, runoff from the excessive rainfall will cause small creeks and streams to rise and flash flooding to occur on highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying areas.
In its report, the National Weather Service urges drivers to avoid driving into areas where the water covers the roadway, as water may be too deep to cross safely.
In Mooresville, this week’s heavy rains already have caused a section of the town sewage system to back up near the Mooresville Golf Course, The Mooresville Tribune reported. The backup happened Wednesday.
