Who might throw their hats into the ring this fall in local election campaigns across the area? Voters will begin finding out Friday, when candidate registration begins at the Mecklenburg Board of Elections.
Filing opens Friday, July 1, at noon and continues through Friday, July 15, at noon, at the board of elections, 741 Kenilworth Ave., Charlotte. The Nov. 8 ballot will include all seats for Davidson Town Board and Mayor as well as other local races, including Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board.
In Davidson, Mayor John Woods says he’s running again. And some, if not all of the current commissioners are expected to seek re-election.
River Run resident Mickey Pettus is the first challenger so far to announce plans to seek a seat on the board.
Meanwhile, disaffected voters unhappy with the town’s fiscal situation say they’re recruiting challengers.
“We are trying to organize and make sure citizens of Davidson have a choice in this year’s election,” said Vince Winegardner, a River Run resident and member of the Davidson Planning Board.
Mr. Winegardner has been among a group of residents that have been meeting recently to discuss the fall campaign. On Thursday, he declined to say who, if anyone, his group has recruited.
He said he and his group are concerned about three major issues, “that Leadership and the ‘Davidson way’ are not working at Town Hall; (about) MI-Connection, and what we’re going to have to do to fix that; and then the impact of property taxes on recruiting businesses and preserving home ownership for our fixed-income citizens.”
