Beginning this Friday, North Carolina landfills will no longer accept computers, computer equipment and televisions. A new state law establishes an electronics recycling program with shared responsibility between manufacturers, retailers, consumers, and local and state government, in response to the rapidly increasing amount of discarded electronic equipment.
Under Session Law 2010-67 of the General Assembly, items no longer allowed at landfills under the electronic waste disposal ban include: computer equipment, including CPUs, laptops, monitors, printers, printer/fax/scan devices, mice and keyboards; and all televisions, including flat-panel televisions, projection televisions and televisions with picture tubes, according to the Mecklenburg County solid waste management website.
Instead of taking electronic items to landfills, Cornelius residents can take them to the North Mecklenburg Recycling Center, 12300 Statesville Road in Huntersville.
