The festivities begin Sunday at 5:30 p.m., when participants will gather at the Davidson IB School on South Street for what organizers last year dubbed a “small-town parade” – all of about two blocks. Children are encouraged to march in the parade dressed in Independence Day attire and to dress up their wagons, bicycles, tricycles and pets in red, white and blue.
A police cruiser and color guard will lead the short parade up South Street onto Main Street and to the Village Green, where all participants will get a free popsicle. The town’s antique fire truck will follow the parade.
Sunday’s Concert on the Green will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature the seven-piece party band Rough Draft, from Charlotte. The band plays hits from artists such as Michael Jackson, Kool & the Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire and Prince and has opened for the SOS Band, Curtis Blow and the Ohio players.
TRANSIT BOARD MEMBER SOUGHT
Applications are being sought for Davidson’s seat on the regional Citizen Transit Advisory Group (CTAG). The vacancy was created when Davidson resident and Lawrence Group planner Craig Lewis decided to step down.
The Citizens Transit Advisory Group reviews the long-range transit system planning and proposed operating and capital programs from the community’s perspective and makes recommendations to the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC). While it is not a policy-making body, its recommendations to the MTC fulfill the requirement levied by the Interlocal Agreement that the MTC ensures public involvement in transit planning.
CTAG is made up of members of the community appointed by the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, the Charlotte City Council, each of the six Towns in Mecklenburg County, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. Members may not be an elected official, and members serve staggered two-year terms.
CTAG meetings are monthly in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center.
To apply, fill out an application on the town website. All applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011.
