Mooresville board asks mayor to quit; he says he won’t

Mooresville’s town board on Monday unanimously approved a resolution asking Mayor Chris Montgomery to resign. But the embattled and embarrassed mayor vowed to finish his term, though he also said he won’t seek re-election this November.

Monday’s 6-0 vote by Town Commissioners followed embarrassing revelations that he had used the town email system to exchange intimate emails with a women who was not his wife. Then, it was revealed that Mayor Montgomery had applied for a job with the developer of Langtree at the Lake, a big mixed-use project off I-77 Exit 31. The developers didn’t act on his application, saying it was inappropriate because the company has business before the town.

Mayor Montgomery was a political newcomer when he won election in 2009 by just 14 votes over incumbent Bill Thunberg. That vote followed a campaign where much of the focus was on the town’s purchase of the local cable TV system, which Mayor Montgomery opposed.
