The other thing I would add to Bill's excellent commentary is that many of the events and institutions in Davidson are supported by Davidson based companies, and not companies out of Charlotte or the "big box" retailers. The recently completed Christmas in Davidson is but one example. Tigers on the Prowl, the very successful running program at Davidson Elementary School is supported exclusively by Davidson businesses. I just grabbed a couple of t-shirts from races I have run in town that support the Davidson Lands Conservancy and the Cornelius-Davidson Day Care, and the contributors shown on the back are almost exclusively businesses in Davidson.

When you give your dollars to a big box retailer or to a company out of Charlotte, there is little chance that that dollar is going to come back and support your community. As a homebuilder (John Marshall Custom Homes) it always pains me when I see someone in Davidson using an out of town contractor on a job, since there are at least half a dozen excellent contractors who live in Davidson and support our community. I have yet to see a Charlotte-based homebuilder support something in Davidson.

You might save a couple of bucks by going out of town with your purchasing power, but ultimately you are shooting your community and yourself in the foot.
