Marguerite Hare Young Davis died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at The Pines at Davidson. She was 93. A memorial service is planned Friday.
Mrs. Davis was the husband of the late Dr. George William “Bill” Davis Jr., to whom she was married 68 years. Mr. Davis passed away Sept. 6, 2010.
She was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo., daughter of James Ulric Young and Ethel Rose Hare Young. Mrs. Davis was educated in the Kansas City school system, graduating from Central High School in 1934.
She received her A.A. degree in 1936 from Christian College, Columbia, Mo., and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo., in 1938 where she was a member of Mortar Board, Gamma Phi Beta, Theta Sigma Phi, the honorary fraternity for women in journalism, and lettered on the Pistol Team.
She married George William Davis Jr., M.D., December 6, 1941. During World War II she drove in the Red Cross Motor Corps. Always active in church, school, and civic affairs, while living in Louisiana she was a member of the Governing Board of Southeast Louisiana University. She taught Art History at the Houston Texas Community College, and was a Senior Docent at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. Since 1967 she was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA. She was a member of Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Since moving to The Pines at Davidson in 1994 she served as a Docent at Latta Plantation, Huntersville, N.C.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, John Christopher Scott, she is survived by a sister, Beth Young Lucy of Lake Forest, Illinois, a daughter Marguerite D. Scott Johnson and her husband Dr. Richard B. Johnson of Kerrville, Texas, a daughter Dorothy D. Duncan and her husband Michael A. Duncan of Charlotte, North Carolina, a son William Y. Davis and his wife Anna Smith Davis of Carbondale, Ill., seven grandchildren; Laura Duncan Stermer and her husband Major Jeremy A. Stermer, Christine Scott Gensch and her husband A. Scott Gensch, Jeffrey D. Duncan and his wife Chrystelle Chalvin Duncan, Rebecca Oettinger Feder and her husband Russell Feder, Abigale and Gretchen Schramm-Davis, and Beth Mei Cai E. Davis, and nine great grandchildren.
The family would like to especially thank the staff of The Pines Health Care Center.
A memorial service is planned Friday, Oct. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s Lingle Chapel. A reception will be held at 1 p.m. in the Living Room at The Pines, 400 Avinger Lane.
Private burial in Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson will precede the memorial service.
