Marilyn Clark
Marilyn Miller Clarke, 82, of Davidson, passed away peacefully at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, following a short illness.
Marilyn was born on June 12, 1928, in Cambridge, Mass. She attended New Jersey State College for Women (now a part of Rutgers University) and completed her degrees in English and Music at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
She met her future Husband, Harold S. Clarke, at a Vermont state teacher conference. After they married, Marilyn taught music and English in Vermont high schools. Shortly thereafter, she and Hal moved to Ashland, Ohio, where she taught music and piano at Ashland College (now Ashland University).
After moving back to Vermont with Hal and her two daughters, Marilyn became a homemaker. Recruited by Chancellor Colvard and Vice President Bonnie Cone to become a part of the new University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the family moved to Charlotte in 1969. Marilyn became a member of the Oratorio Society and UNCC Distaff Club. She also painted with a number of local arts groups and had some of her work exhibited in several area shows. Her shy but knowing smile, ready laugh, and warm heart will be missed by all who know her.
Marilyn was preceded in death by Hal, her husband of 58 years. She is survived by 2 daughters: Andrea McCall and Husband Rick of Huntersville, and Ellen Zeman and Husband Paul of Concord, and one granddaughter, Christie Zeman, also of Concord.
Final arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carolina Voices, 1900 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC 28207 or the Town of Davidson Library Fund, PO Box 579, Davidson, NC 28036.
