Happy 49th birthday to our President who celebrated the event yesterday in Chicago. Today Around Davidson has no birthdays to report but there are three important celebrations to share with our readers.
Bill and Sarah Boehmler are delighted to have a first grandchild; Ruben and Marlene McIntosh are honored by their family on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary; and Jimmy Shaw is now a “marked man” as he earns his Eagle Scout award. There are also a few notes about the final day of cruisin’ at The Pines.
GRANDBABY TALK
Congratulations to Bill and Sarah Boehmler of Avinger Lane who are proud grandparents of a beautiful baby girl. Sarah Hollingsworth Reynolds was born May 6 in Charleston, S.C., weighing just over five pounds and stretching to 17½ inches. Baby Sarah surprised her parents, Davidson College graduates Carlo and Jean Boehmler Reynolds, by arriving a bit early. That gave her a few extra weeks in South Carolina until the family moved to Pennsylvania at the end of June. Carlo is continuing a medical residency at the University of Pennsylvania and needed to be there July 1.
Busy days for this young family. Helping whenever they could were Davidson grandparents, Bill and Sarah, as well as Carlo’s parents, Wayne and Peggy Reynolds of Charlotte. Uncle Shepherd Reynolds is studying architecture at NCSU while Aunts Liz Boehmler and Alexis Boehmler work in NYC. We are glad you are here, Baby Sarah.
HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Hard to believe that “youngsters” Marlene and Ruben McIntosh have been married for 50 years! They tied the knot on July 2, 1960, before a Justice of the Peace in Lancaster, S.C. Turns out that the Justice of the Peace forgot they were coming and enjoyed a fish fry with friends until late on July 1. Thus Marlene and Ruben did not celebrate their wedding vows until 1:05 A.M. on the 2nd. What wonderful memories for them as well as for the friends who traveled to South Carolina with them as witnesses: Carolyn McIntosh, and Pete and Faye McConnell.
Ruben and Marlene were honored with an anniversary party July 31 at Vail Commons on the Davidson College campus. Their three children and four grandchildren all of whom live in the area were there: Todd and Kathy McIntosh, Darin McIntosh with his sons, Curtis (18) and Carson (8), and Christina McIntosh MacQueen and her husband, Heath, with children, Logan (8) and Christian (3).
Also present for the celebration were Richard and Carolyn McIntosh and Raymond and Shirley McIntosh (Ruben’s brothers and wives) with nephews Jimmy Mcintosh and wife Laurie, sister-in-law Becky McIntosh with niece Shannon Weaver and husband Graham, nephew Bob McIntosh & his wife Ann and great nephew & niece Bo and Sarah McIntosh. Wanda and Tommy Treadaway (Marlene’s sister), niece Leslie Keller & her husband Blake as well as cousins Becky Starnes & her husband George, Doris Sherrill & her husband Jimmy, Shelia Cato and her husband William, Colen Sipes & his wife Sondra, Rhonda Shumake, and so many loved lifelong friends!
Following a wonderful meal, Marlene and Ruben shared in cutting their three-tier basket-weave cake made by Ann McIntosh. They enjoyed the music from Tracy McMurry of Turntables Mobile DJ service. Pictures were taken by photographer Vicki Stone Hubschmitt of Mooresville. What a wonderful party it was and both wish to thank so many in the community for their cards and well wishes on this special anniversary. Ruben recently retired after 45 years working for Davidson College. He and Marlene live on Grey Road. Congratulations to you both!

Eagle Scout Jimmy Shaw stands with his Eagle Scout grandfather, Arthur Gaston, and Troop 58 Scoutmasters (l-r) Van Beck and Ben Yarborough
TROOP 58’S NEWEST EAGLE
Last Sunday was a wonderful celebration of hard work and commitment for James Baron Shaw III (Jimmy), son of Jim Shaw of Davidson and Holly Harwood of Cornelius. Jimmy first came to a meeting of Davidson’s Boy Scout Troop 58 when a friend invited him. Not having been in scouting before, he liked the program immediately and at age 14½ began to earn advancement. The “late start” in boy scouting caused Jimmy to work even harder to accomplish his goal. Boy Scouting has a rule that any scout wanting to earn the rank of Eagle must have his project completed by the time he turns 18 years of age.

Happy smiles for new Eagle Scout Jimmy Shaw with his parents (l-r) Joe and Holly Harwood and Jim and Alison Rusk-Shaw
Jimmy turned 18 this past March 31 and turned in his Eagle project 48 hours before the deadline on March 29. Whew! Bet there was a collective sigh of relief from his stepdad, Joe Harwood, stepmom, Alison Rusk-Shaw and siblings, David (also a scout in Troop 58), Katherine, Emily, Katie and Caroline. Grandparents present for the Eagle Court of Honor were Arthur and Elaine Gaston of Chester, SC, and Baron and Lucille Shaw from Greensboro. Also present was Alison’s mother, Kathy Fabozzi, and her sister, Lee Ann Mohr and her husband, Derek, and sons, Matthew and Jack, all from Cornelius. Traveling from Wilmington, were Jimmy’s Aunt Jane Sheffer and her daughter, Lauren.
On his road to Eagle, Jimmy earned 23 merit badges as well as the Order of the Arrow. His is the 72nd scout in Troop 58 to earn this distinction. His Eagle project was to clear brush, clean and landscape the area at the head of the Greenway entrance in Hudson Place. Jimmy’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held this past Sunday in the Congregation House of the Davidson College Presbyterian Church followed by lunch for family and friends in attendance. Former Scoutmasters Van Beck and Ben Yarborough took part in the program as did members of the troop. The Eagle Charge was particularly meaningful as it was given by Jimmy’s grandfather, Arthur Gaston, an Eagle Scout himself who remains active in scouting in Chester, SC.
Jimmy, a Cannon School graduate this past May, begins his college career in a few weeks at Virginia Tech where he hopes to major in Mechanical Engineering. Best of luck, Jimmy, and congratulations on this fine honor.
A CRUISE TO REMEMBER
(This is the third report in a series covering an amazing week at The Pines.) Residents of The Pines Retirement Community will be talking for months about their weeklong virtual cruise which comes to an end tomorrow morning when the “Ancient Mariner” returns to Key West. This evening there is a celebration of their “days at sea” featuring a wine and cheese gathering followed by a Captain’s Dinner with Captain Eddie Muller presiding. Seated at the table with Eddie will be honored guests who have been at The Pines since the beginning. After the meal, guests will adjourn to the Davidson Room for a Farewell Dance.
A highlight of the week’s activities was a Tuesday evening Gong Show with participation from The Pines as well as the community. Thanks to Scott Galloway and fellow judges for a great occasion. Hands down the winner of the talent was teenager Caroline Yuen who presented a comedy routine filled with cruise comments. Vanna White (Nyra Brannan) was an impressive “Mistress of Ceremonies.” Marilyn Monroe (Cindy Rhodes) was the celebrity of the party. What fun! How creative! Kudos to Nyra Brannan and her “hench-women,” Lou Chittenden and Mary Ann Taylor, for a job well done!
