Davidson College psychology professor Julio Ramirez is among six new members appointed recently to the board of trustees at Discovery Place, the Charlotte science and technology museum.

Dr. Ramirez is a professor of psychology and teaches courses in psychology and neuroscience at the college. He lives in the McConnell neighborhood with wife Annie Porges, who is director of the Davidson Athletic Foundation, and kids Elia and Julian.

The museum said Friday that Dr. Ramirez had been appointed to the board for 2010-11 along with Patricia Crawford of Wells Fargo Bank, A. Victor Fields of The Charlotte Observer, Michael Jones of Husqvarna, Paul Rutledge of Transamerica Reinsurance, and Andrea Smith of Bank of America.

Friday’s announcement means Dr. Ramirez will be returning to the Discovery Place board of trustees, where he previously served from 2003-2009. He is the Stuart R. Dickson professor of psychology at Davidson, where he has taught since 1986. His research interests include the recovery of function after central nervous system injury, with an emphasis on determining the functional significance of hippocampal neuroplasticity. He is an editor for the journal Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience and he was the founding senior editor of The Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education.
