Water-based programs at the Lake Norman YMCA remained on hold Wednesday, two days after a spill at a Davidson lift station sent sewage into Lake Cornelius.

A spokeswoman said the YMCA is in close touch with Mecklenburg County environmental services officials who are monitoring the situation. Waterskiing and shark rides were suspended for a second day Wednesday as a precaution she said.

Mecklenburg County officials posted a swimming ban for Lake Cornelius on Monday afternoon after sewage leaked from a lift station on Peninsula Drive, in the Exit 30 area of Davidson. About 375 gallons of wastewater overflow are reported to have spilled.

County officials remain “confident that the area around the Lake Norman YMCA beach is highly unlikely to be touched, but the YMCA will continue to take precautions,” the spokeswoman said in an email. The Y is expecting to resume some programs on Friday.

The Y invites summer campers in the waterskiing program to sign up for makeup slots by contacting the office at 704-716-4418 or by emailing lakenormanyouth@ymcacharlotte.org. Make up days and times are: Friday, July 23, 6-8 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 10 a.m. to noon and noon to 2 p.m.
