Mooresville firefighters extinguished a smoldering fire at the former Burlington textile mill Tuesday morning that started as workers were renovating the building for a new furniture outlet store. Also last week, firefighters responded to a variety of alarms and minor calls, including one report of an overturned kayak in the waters off I-77 that turned out to be nothing serious. Those reports and the week’s medical calls below.
BURLINGTON MILL INCIDENT
Mooresville Fire & Rescue units were called to the former Burlington mill at 476 S. Main St., Mooresville, early Tuesday morning after workers renovating the building found smoke when they arrived for the day.
The incident shut down demolition work on the building, which is being renovated as a Wow Home Furnishings outlet. Mooresville chief Wes Green said Thursday officials expected to lift a stop-work order at the site Thursday afternoon.
Chief Green said the fire apparently began Monday night when sparks from a welder’s torch fell into a crawl space and ignited debris below. That started a small fire that smoldered overnight. Workers discovered the smoldering fire when they arrived at the job site Tuesday morning, and called the fire department around 6:22 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from two sides of the former mill. They quickly extinguished the fire, but remained on scene for 3 1/2 hours to ensure the building was safe, Chief Green said. As a precaution, work on the building was halted so fire officials could inspect the operation.
The chief estimated that the fire caused less than $1,000 damage.
While Mooresville units were occupied with the incident, Davidson’s Engine 1 was briefly called up to the Mount Mourne fire station on N.C. 115 to cover any calls.
Concord Global Trading Inc. of New York acquired the former mill in January, and announced plans to open a Wow Home Furnishings retail and wholesale furniture showroom. Original plans called for the store to be open by May.
