Summer may not officially arrive until Monday but with our current heat and humidity, it’s already here. Great weather for gardens and first tomatoes – even if they are only cherries!
Today North Mecklenburg High School graduates cross the stage to receive their diplomas in a noontime ceremony at Bojangles Arena. Congratulations to all. Around Davidson caught up with the following grads from North Meck, Mooresville and Portsmouth Abbey: twins, Will and John Krentz, Danner McCulloh, Greg Sutton, Katherine Rusk and Eloise Andry.

Jeri Krentz stands with Will (l) and John after the 2010 All State Soccer Award ceremony in Greensboro
DENISON BOUND
Will and John Krentz
Empty nest is looming for Peter and Jeri Krentz as they prepare to send their twins off to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, later this summer. Will and John graduate today with diplomas from the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) at North Mecklenburg High School. Cheering them on in addition to Mom and Dad will be Peter’s parents, Ed and Becky Krentz from Chicago, as well as Jeri’s mom, Lorraine Fischer from St. Louis.
Soccer has been an important part of Will and John’s life since playing in youth programs. Both were named to the All-State Soccer team for 2010 and received awards at a ceremony recently in Greensboro. They hope to continue their soccer careers at Denison.
In addition to school and soccer, the twins have worked as servers in the dining room at The Pines for the past two years and are favorites of the residents. They will continue there until August when they head to Ohio. (A note about older brother, Tyler: he just finished his junior year at Trinity University (Texas) with a semester of study in Rome. A classics major, he is currently working as a research assistant to Davidson College’s Mike Toumazou in Cyprus and was sorry to miss today’s graduation ceremony.) Best wishes to all the Krentz family.
DANNER LEE MCCULLOH
Congratulations to Danner Lee McCulloh who graduated from Mooresville High School on June 12 and is also headed for Denison University this fall with hopes of playing soccer. Danner is the son of Mark and Audrey McCulloh. His brother, Cad, who has just finished his junior year at Lees-McRae. Danner already has ties to Denison since his maternal great grandfather, Danner Lee Mahood (Davidson College ’23) taught English at Denison and Danner is named for him.
Danner has an interest in pursuing a major in design or perhaps German, which he comes by naturally since his father teaches German at Davidson College and his mother teaches German and Latin at Mooresville High School. His love of soccer comes from years playing in youth leagues and joining the Krentz twins in club play for the North Meck U-18 Red team. Danner also played soccer for four years on the Mooresville High School team.
GREG SUTTON HEADED TO ELON
Another North Mecklenburg graduate today is Greg Sutton, son of Homer and Catherine Slawy-Sutton who is headed up I-85 to Elon University this fall. Greg has a full summer working right now part-time at the Davidson Chocolate Company until taking a week later this month in Shenandoah National Park with the Elon’s Discover Program. He will join his parents for a month in France in July visiting his grandmother in Nice and friends in Tours before returning to Davidson to pack his suitcase for college.
Catching up with Greg’s sister, Elodie, we learn that she and her husband, Jacques, are here today from Washington, D.C. for Greg’s graduation. Elodie continues her work at the French Embassy and is completing a Master’s in International Education at American University.
KATHERINE RUSK WILL BE A TAR HEEL
Congratulations to Jim and Alison Rusk Shaw as Katherine Rusk graduates today. The family is still on a high from watching Katherine and her sister, Emily, participate as members of the North Mecklenburg High School soccer team which won the Girls’ State Soccer Championship last month. Katherine receives her diploma and heads for Chapel Hill in the fall. Her sister and teammate on the soccer team, Emily Rusk, leaves North for the new Hough High in August. As mom Alison said, “This is probably the last time the girls will attend the same school. But what a wonderful memory they will always share!”
This busy blended family will see Katherine off to UNC-CH and Jimmy Shaw off to Blacksburg where he enters his freshman year at Virginia Tech. (Jimmy graduated from Cannon School last month; congratulations to the family a second time!) Katie Shaw will be a junior at Cannon School while Emily Rusk will be a junior at Hough. David Shaw and Caroline Rusk are rising 8th and 7th graders respectively at Bailey Middle School.
ELOISE ANDRY STAYS IN NEW ENGLAND
Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode Island was the setting for the 80th Commencement exercises on May 30 when Eloise Claire Andry received her diploma and was presented with multiple scholastic recognitions. Eloise is the daughter of Allain and Mary Catherine Andry. This fall she will enter Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
Eloise’s awards included the Modern Language Award for excellence in Spanish, the History Book Award and the school’s Excellence in Scholarship Award. In addition to her academic excellence, Eloise found time to participate in soccer, squash, tennis and equestrian sports. Congratulations to the Andry family.
