The MI-Connection communications system board of directors on Thursday confirmed John Kasberger of Mooresville as chair and voted Ken Essex of Davidson to another term as secretary. Meanwhile, in other news about the system, it turns out Mooresville’s payment to cover a shortfall at the system this fiscal year won’t be a loan, as previously described.

VOTE ON OFFICERS

Thursday’s election of officers came during a telephone meeting of the system’s board.

Mr. Kasberger had been interim chairman since last fall. He will serve a term that concludes in January 2011. Mr. Kasberger is retired from Lowe’s Cos. in Mooresville, where he was a senior vice president and general merchandising manager.

Mr. Essex is a Davidson resident and business lawyer.

One more position on the board has yet to be filled, that of treasurer. Alan Hall, MI-Connection’s general manager, said the board expects to vote on that appointment at its April 29 regular meeting.

LOAN NOT A LOAN

At Mooresville’s Town Board meeting Monday, commissioners were told that a $400,000 payment by Mooresville this fiscal year to cover a shortfall at the system won’t be a loan, as previously described, the Mooresville Tribune reported.

The system this winter asked its owners, the towns of Mooresville and Davidson, for $576,000 to make up a deficit in the fiscal year ending June 30. In March, Mooresville’s town board approved a $400,000 loan from town reserves. In February, Davidson trimmed its budget to come up with its $180,000 share.

The Mooresville Tribune reports that Mooresville Finance Director Maia Setzer told the board that the $400,000 payment will be just that – a payment. The board had approved the money with the idea that it would be repaid by 2015.

Mr. Hall, MI-Connection’s general manager, said Thursday that under the terms of the two-town agreement that set up MI-Connection, the system can’t legally borrow money on its own. Instead it must rely on the two towns for funding.
