Ideas for improving traffic on I-77 – and paying for it – are on the agenda at a pair of Lake Norman Transportation Commission meetings next week. The four-town group will hold a special meeting Tuesday, April 13, to discuss a potential high-occupancy toll lane for I-77. And the topic is also on the agenda at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 14. Both are open to the public.
At its March meeting, the commission heard a presentation on “managed lanes” for I-77 in north Mecklenburg. The idea calls for a current “high-occupancy” lane to be converted to “high-occupancy toll” lanes, or HOT lanes. Fees could change depending on the time of day.
Tuesday’s meeting of the commission’s I-77 Task Force is at noon in Room 202 of Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave. Commission members will discuss a state proposal to adopt a toll lane on a section of I-77 from north Charlotte to north Mecklenburg. The task force will talk about how the managed lanes concept might operate, if adopted, and whether it and the full LNTC should endorse this concept. Guess speaker is Lynn Purnell of Parsons-Brinkerhof.
Wednesday’s meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., in the Cornelius Town Hall manager’s conference room, Room 217. State Sen. Dan Clodfelter will be there to speak and answer questions. The commission will also hear a report and recommendation from the I-77 Task Force on managed lanes, discuss the final report of the Urban Land Institute study panel that visited the region, and review its proposed 2010-11 budget.
