Public radio station WFAE-FM, 90.7, in Charlotte aired a report Wednesday morning that takes a look back and forward at the purchase of the local cable TV system by the towns of Davidson and Mooresville.
The report was produced by DavidsonNews.net editor and WFAE reporter David Boraks, who has been following the towns’ cable system purchase for several years. Click the play button to listen
Here’s the report, beginning with “Morning Edition” host Scott Graf’s introduction:
MI-Connection cable bleeds Davidson, Mooresville coffers
In December 2007, the towns of Davidson and Mooresville went into the cable business. They spent $60 million to form a company called MI-Connection (MY-Connection) and take control of cable service for their towns, Cornelius and the surrounding area.
The venture is generally praised for improving service to communities that had been served by bankrupt Adelphia Communications. But it’s also proving to be a money pit.
WFAE’s David Boraks reports.

I enjoyed this radio segment. I’m surprised the issue hasn’t made more regional news or even national, but I think that day is coming as the losses mount. I signed up for MI Connection’s bundle after reading Mayor Woods’ plea to the citizens. My internet speed shot way up, phone quality stayed the same, and TV got a lot worse (than DirecTV’s HD quality and content). I guess it’s a break even on quality, but $40 cheaper per month than I was paying. I have this funny feeling that every dollar I save will be spent on raised taxes in the coming year to cover this system. It’s so sad for the employees of the town that they may lose their jobs over this. And, it’s also sad that the image of the town could potentially be destroyed if this deal gets worse and major media outlets take notice.
Michael:
I am the general manager of MI-Connection, and I would like to thank you for both your support and your feedback. I would also be interested to know what channels you miss on your new TV service. We added over 100 new channels after our upgrade, but we need to continue to improve whenever we can. I can be reached at ahall@mi-connection.net. Thanks again.
