Area musicians will play an all-day concert Saturday at Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson to help raise money for Haitian earthquake relief. Meanwhile, other groups and businesses are also planning events to raise money and awareness about the needs of Haitians following the Jan. 12 quake.
Summit is at 128 S. Main St. Saturday’s benefit will run 3-11 p.m. and will include Chas Willoman, Rusty Knox Band, Billy Jones and The Pocket, Rick Spreitzer Band, Eric Scott Guthrie, and Skeleton Kednig.
Also, Summit Coffee is publishing a compilation CD of local artists who have donated their music to the cause, and 100 percent of proceeds will go to support relief efforts in Haiti. Discs will be on sale for $8 at Summit Coffee starting this Friday. Artists featured on the CD will include: Rusty Knox, Billy Jones, Cast Iron Filter, Michael Orlando, Dustin Edge, Actual Proof, Dennis Currier, Rick Spreitzer, and more.

JAN. 31 COMMUNITY EVENT
A Jan. 31 fund-raising and community service event planned here in Davidson that will raise money and provide a hands-on helping experience.
Beginning at 1:15 p.m. at Davidson College Presbyterian Church congregation house on Concord Road, community volunteers will help to package emergency food for Haiti through Stop Hunger Now, a Raleigh-based nonprofit group. That effort will be followed by a community worship service, with a collection to help the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. FRIDAY, JAN. 29, 7:30 p.m., Cannon School – Basketball coaches nationwide, including those in the Cannon vs. Providence Day game, will be coaching in their bare feet as part of an effort by nonprofit Samaritan’s Feet to send 100,000 pairs of shoes to Haiti.
SUNDAY, JAN. 31,, 1:15 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House, Concord Road – Community service and fund-raising event organized by a coalition of Davidson clergy. Volunteers will help package dried food in cooperation with Stop Hunger Now of Raleigh. To be followed at 3:15 p.m. by a community worship service at DCPC.
HARRIS TEETER stores will be selling $1 and $5 Haiti Earthquake Relief Cards beginning Friday, Jan. 15. The Matthews-based grocery chain also is making its own $25,000 donation. All funds will go directly to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.
AMERICAN RED CROSS – The American Red Cross has pledged an initial $1 million from its International Response Fund to help with earthquake relief. There are several ways to give: Make an unrestricted donation to the International Response Fund at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). You can send an instant $10 donation by texting “Haiti” to 90999, in an effort backed by the U.S. State Department.
