Lake Norman Transportation Commission meets again Thursday, Jan. 14, in Davidson to finalize plans for a planned four-day workshop later this month that will bring a panel of national planning experts here to help devise strategies for helping the region promote economic growth. Thursday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall. Details about the workshop, with experts from the Urban Land Institute, and a full agenda for Thursday’s meeting, are below.
The board also will be asked to approve the minutes of its Dec. 9, 2009, meeting. Download the draft minutes here. (PDF)
URBAN LAND INSTITUTE MEETING
The transportation commission includes representatives from Davidson, Cornelius, Mooresville and Huntersville. It was formed last year to help the town’s develop a unified voice and strategy to advocate for needed transportation investments in the Lake Norman area.
Last year, the group decided to invite the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Land Institute to convene a panel of experts here to help guide its efforts. The Jan. 25-29 meetings will be headquartered at Davidson’s Homewood Suites hotel and include tours and sessions throughout the area.
The tours and daylong sessions are aimed at helping the north Mecklenburg and south Iredell region assess its economic potential, study the infrastructure needed to help achieve that potential, and suggest funding ideas to help pay for infratructure.
The cost of the four-day workshop is being underwritten by the four towns and Mecklenburg County as well as private businesses.
On its website, the commission says the Urban Land Institute advisory panel will be led by Glenda Hood, former mayor of Orlando, Fla., and now Florida Secretary of State. Ms. Hood will be joined by seven other panelists including John Eisen, StreetSense, Bethesda, Md.; Allen Folks, AECOM Design, Sacramento, Calif.; William Lashbrook, PNC Real Estate Finance, East Brunswick, N.J.; Jim Ratkovich, James Ratkovich Associates, Pasadena, Calif.; Zane Segal, Zane Segal Projects, Houston, Texas; Jack Wierzenski, Dallas Rapid Transit, Dallas, Texas; and Tom Eitler, Urban Land Institute, Washington, D.C.
