Madeleine Wright will represent Davidson Elementary at Friday's north district spelling bee for CMS.
Keep your fingers c-r-o-s-s-e-d Friday morning for the three local spellers at the CMS north district bee. We have a report on them below, along with application information for families pondering their many options for school assignments in the fall. The CMS magnet lottery, which includes Davidson’s own International Baccalaureate Middle School, opens Friday.

LOCAL SPELLERS HEAD TO CMS BEE
The North Learning Community for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will hold its annual spelling bee Friday morning at Cornelius Elementary. Representing Davidson-area schools will be Madeleine Wright of Davidson Elementary, Kaitlyn Kelly of Bailey Middle, and Emily Yue of Davidson IB Middle. These three young women were all winners of their school bees and will compete Friday for the chance to represent the north area in the CMS district bee.
“My winning word was ‘rutabaga,'” reported Madeleine, the daughter of Doug and Réa Wright of Davidson.
Madeleine first won her class bee, on the word “quarantine,” and then represented Katherine Radcliff’s 5th grade class at the school-wide bee, open to grades 3-5. Runner up was Ben Sellers, a 4th grader in Shannel Hoyer’s class and the son of Kathryn and Pat Sellers.
At Davidson IB, it all came down to the word “mallard,” which Emily Yue spelled correctly for the championship. The 8th grader is the daughter of Bill and Vera Yue of Huntersville. She does not consider herself a good speller, but says she is an avid reader and that helps. During the IB school bee, Emily went through several rounds with 7th grader Jacob Pilsbury, the son of Ruth and Adam Pilsbury of Huntersville, whose big sister Louise was last year’s IB spelling champ.
At Bailey Middle, Kaitlyn Kelly’s winning word was “conundrum.” The 8th grader is a Davidson Elementary alum and the daughter of Eric and Sandy Kelly. Bailey’s runner up was 6th grader Zach Marti, the son of Laura and Gerardo Marti of Davidson.
Good l-u-c-k, spellers! (Below are, from left, Madeleine, Emily and Kaitlyn.)

UPDATE: Madeleine Wright of Davidson Elementary placed 5th among 17 at the CMS north area spelling bee Friday morning, making her way through words like “anticoagulant” and “latitudinarian” (which, just in case you’re not familiar with that one, means “holding or expressing tolerant views”). Congrats to Madeleine, who is only a 5th grader! We will have more results on the bee in next week’s School Notes.
