Davidson firefighters helped seven other area fire departments fight a four-home fire off Poplar Tent Road, in Cabarrus County, on Monday. They also helped Cornelius with an incident at the Foamex plant in Cornelius after a diesel motor overheated. And they responded to a variety of non-fire, false alarm and emergency medical services calls last week. Details below:
FIRE CALLS
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 30, 4:51 p.m., The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane – Firefighters were dispatched for a reported smoke detector activation. While en route, they were advised that it was an accidental alarm, no smoke or fire. On arrival, Davidson canceled response by Cornelius firefighters. Investigated and found no fire.
THURSDAY, DEC. 31, 8:34 a.m., Davidson College, 207 Faculty Drive – Firefighters investigated a report of a gas leak, but a monitor registered nothing. Campus Police and Physical Plant were notified of the incident.
MONDAY, JAN. 4, 5:02 a.m., 19721 S. Ferry St., Cornelius – Davidson and Cornelius fire crews responded to South Ferry Street for a report of a fire. When they arrived they found light smoke visible, and occupants evacuating. An investigation found a small fire in the attic, which was extinguished.
MONDAY, JAN. 4, 10:28 a.m., Foamex plant, 18801 Old Statesville Rd. – Davidson and Cornelius firefighters responded to a report of a fire and smoke at the industrial plant. When they arrived, they found smoke only, coming from an exterior building housing the plant’s fire suppression equipment. A Foamex spokeswoman said later a diesel motor that powers the system overheated during a weekly test. Plant personnel told firefighters the engine seized up and the building filled with smoke. MONDAY, JAN. 4, 11 a.m., Brampton Drive, Cabarrus County – Davidson was called to assist 7 other area fire departments responding to a multi-structure fire in Cabarrus County, off Poplar Tent Road. A total of 4 homes were involved. The initial call, after 11 a.m., brought firefighters from Concord and Odell Volunteer fire departments, who found two houses burning, with fire extending to two additional houses. At 11:11 Cornelius, Huntersville, Mallard Creek and Davidson fire departments were called to assist. Davidson assisted Harrisburg firefighers extinguish the “C division” of the fire area.
