William David Adair of Huntersville, a former Duke Energy executive, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 25, after a long struggle with ALS. He was 66. Visiting hours are Monday evening, and a funeral is planned Tuesday. Details below.
He was born in Philadelphia, the son of Francis and Marion Adair. He grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School.
In 1965, Bill received a B.S. in zoology from Pennsylvania State University. He did post-graduate work for a masters’ degree at the University of Miami. Upon completion of his studies he was hired as a Fisheries Biologist by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
In 1970, Bill went to work for Duke Power Co. to conduct studies on Lake Norman. He worked for Duke for 32 years. During 3 of his last 6 years of tenure at Duke, he was on contract as the Director of Environmental Protection at the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Wash. In 1999, Bill accepted a position as Director of Environmental Health and Safety Services for Duke Energy North America in Houston, Texas.
After retiring from Duke in 2002, he marketed environmental services for Mactec Engineering and Consulting Inc. Charlotte.
For many years Bill and his family were active members of Huntersville First Baptist Church where he was a youth Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was a great encourager of all he knew and was famous for his contagious smile and sense of humor. Bill enjoyed fly fishing and anything that took him outdoors where he could enjoy the beauty of God’s creation
Survivors include his wife, Janet Adair of Huntersville; daughters, Colleen Wentink and husband David of Raleigh, North Carolina; April Alverson and husband Brian of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; grandchildren, Anna and Lydia Wentink and Samuel, William and Owen Alverson; brothers, Frank Adair and his wife Patty of Madison, New Jersey; Bruce Adair and wife Linda of Holland, Michigan. He will be missed by his many friends from Harvest Community Church where he and Jan are current members, and the volunteers and caregivers who encouraged and cared for him during his illness.
Memorials may be made to Harvest Community Church, 13301 Eastfield Road, Huntersville, 28078. Contributions will be used for the ministries of Harvest and also for the ministry work of Actionelle Fleurisma in Haiti, which was dear to Bill’s heart.
The funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m., at Harvest Community Church.
The family will receive friends on Monday, December 28 from 6-8 p.m., at Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville.
