Strawberries at farmers market, ‘Charlie Brown’ on as scheduled
Updated Sat., 3 p.m.
A couple of inches of snow covered Davidson and the surrounding area Friday night before turning to sleet and freezing rain. The result this morning was a glistening landscape, with ice sparkling on trees and a “rain” from melting ice falling onto a frozen landscape.
Most public events Friday night in Davidson were canceled, and parks & recreation programs today (Saturday) have been called off. But other events are on as planned: the Davidson Farmers Market was operating its pre-holiday market this morning. And today’s performances of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” at Armour Street Theatre are a go as well.
ACCIDENTS AND A FIRE
Police Chief Jeanne Miller said officers were busy last night responding to minor automobile accidents on the icy roads. One came at East Rocky River and Davidson-Concord Road. But after rush hour, the streets were mostly empty.
Davidson and Cornelius firefighters responded to a chimney fire at a home on Holly Trail Lane, off Shearer Road. When they arrived, flames could be seen from the chimney. The fire was extinguished, though reaching it with ladders on an icy roof was treacherous.
But many events Friday night were canceled, including a performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at Armour Street Theatre (rescheduled to Sunday at 11 a.m.). Also canceled was a performance by the band Davidson Local at Summit Coffee, which was to have raised money for the family of Jorge Fiscal Cruz. (He was the Davidson restaurant worker killed in a bicycle accident last month.) That event will be rescheduled.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools called off all after-school and evening activities.
