Davidson and Cornelius firefighters responded to a fire on the second floor of the CVS building on Main Street last Thursday, Dec. 10, that started when canned cooking fluid under a food warmer caught papers on fire.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 9, 5:26 p.m., 224 N. Kimberly Road – Firefighters found a water pipe leaking in the home’s front yard. They attempted to shut off the water at the meter and a resident called Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities. CMU responded at 6:10 p.m.
THURSDAY, DEC. 10, 1:09 p.m., CVS pharmacy, 127 S. Main St. – Davidson and Cornelius firefighters were dispatched for a report of a fire at the CVS. When they arrived they found employees in a second-floor office “actively engaged” in putting out a cooking-relaed fire on a counter-top. The call was upgraded to a working fire. An investigation found the fire started when flames from a Sterno food warmer ignited paper that had been placed beneath the heater. The fire burned a 5-foot square section of countertop and tile floor, but damage was minimal. It was out by 1:21 p.m. Firefighters used fans to ventilate the offices. The fire marshal’s office was called to investigate.
THURSDAY, DEC. 10, 4:42 p.m., Davidson College Hancock dorm, 113 Dormitory Drive – Firefighters arrived to find an evacuation in progress. A small cooking fire had been extinguished, with no damage. Firefighters assisted with ventilation.
THURSDAY, DEC. 10, 10:46 p.m., 221 Depot St. – Alarm malfunction, no fire.
FRIDAY, DEC. 11, 11:34 p.m., I-77 northbound, mile marker 32, Mount Mourne – Called to assist with a motor vehicle accident. Nothing found.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13, 12:02 p.m., St. Alban’s Church, 301 Caldwell Lane – Firefighters helped free a child from a locked car.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13, 1:41 p.m., 18835 Statesville Road, Cornelius – Dispatched for a reported structure fire, but canceled en route.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13, 4 p.m., 19704 Zion Ave., Cornelius – dispatched for a fire alarm, canceled en route.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13, 104 S. Main St. – Motor vehicle accident. 2 passenger vehicles were in a minor accident with limited damage. Nobody injured.
SUNDAY, DEC. 13, 8:18 p.m., 409 Ridge Road, Davidson College dorm – A smoke detector activated when a student lit a candle in her dorm room. Firefighters advised the occupant of the issues of open flames in a dormitory.
MONDAY, DEC. 14, 7:59 p.m., 19321 River Crossing Boulevard, River Run neighborhood – Smoke detector activated because of a malfunction. Replaced bad head, restored system.
