The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant to support the home-buyer education and financial literacy program of the Davidson Housing Coalition (DHC).
The non-profit coalition was founded in 1996 to help families buy or rent safe, decent and affordable housing. The organization assists the Town of Davidson in implementing the town’s Affordable Housing Ordinance, which requires that 12.5 percent of units in new residential development be “affordable” to families and individuals earning less than 80 percent of the area median income. DHC has developed or acquired more than 65 affordable units thus far for purchase or for rent.
The organization also offers home-buyer education and financial counseling services to help people be successful in home ownership. DHC also provides low-cost, emergency repairs to homes of low-income people through its HAMMERS program.
DHC’s financial education sessions cover budgeting and saving, evaluation of debt, credit ranking, mortgages, home maintenance and foreclosure prevention. These classes, as well as one-on-one financial counseling, are mandatory for families and individuals interested in purchasing an affordable home through the town ordinance. However, the services are also open to the general public.
Jay Everette, community affairs manager for the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation, said, “Our mission is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life, and make a positive difference. Davidson Housing Coalition is vital in accomplishing these goals, and we are proud to support your commitment to the community.”
