Signs have gone up on the new cinema in Davidson.
Although there’s still no definite opening date for the planned Our Town Cinemas off Griffith Street, the four-screen first-run movie theater is inching closer to its debut. Exterior signs went up this week at Sadler Square Shopping Center, where renovations are continuing. And the theater has announced titles of the movies it plans to show when it opens, likely in early January.
In a “Coming Soon” section of its website, the theater lists several holiday releases: the Meryl Streep-Alec Baldwin comedy “It’s Complicated,” Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog,” and “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey Jr.

"The Princess and the Frog."
Spokeswoman Jan Black said the theater still doesn’t have a firm opening date, and tickets aren’t on sale yet for specific shows. But all three of those films are either due for Christmas release or are already out. DavidsonNews.net will post news of an opening date as soon as it’s available.
Signs for the new theater were erected on the Griffith Street entrance to Sadler Square shopping center, and on the corner space where the theater box office and entrance will be.
Renovations underway this fall have transformed the former dollar-store and pizzeria space in the shopping center into four screening rooms, with cabaret-style seating. The rooms include two with about 80 seats each and two of about 40 seats each The cinema will have a “beefed up” concession stand that among other things will serve pizzas from the nearby Brick House Tavern, as well as sandwiches, cookies, chocolate and other foods.
The theater began hiring employees last month and announced ticket prices: $9 is the top price for a weekend show – a dollar less than other theaters in the area.
There’s still no word on another commonly asked question: Will the theater be serving beer and wine? Town planning officials said this week they have not seen an application for a permit. The town typically reviews all applications for alcoholic beverage permits.
While tickets aren’t on sale yet, Our Town Cinemas is offering gift certificates for tickets and concessions. The theater is posting titles, gift certificate offers, email sign-ups and other information on its website, www.ourtowncinemas.com. Job applications are also being taken through the site, Ms. Black said.
