2 football players get Academic All-District honors

The Davidson men’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Southern Conference South Division in the coming season, while senior Will Archambault was elected to the preseason all-conference team in a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches.
College of Charleston topped the South Division and garnered eight first-place votes, followed by Wofford, which had three first-place votes. The Citadel was picked fourth, followed by Furman and Georgia Southern. Davidson received the other first-place tally.
Western Carolina topped the North Division, receiving 10 first-place votes, and Appalachian State was second, logging the other two first-place tallies. Samford was third, followed by Chattanooga. Elon and UNC Greensboro tied for fifth.
Archambault is the Wildcats’ top returning scorer after averaging 8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game in 35 contests. He scored in double figures in 14 contests.
Andrew Goudelock from the College of Charleston was tabbed the Preseason Player of the Year. Joining Goudelock and Archambault on the preseason All-SoCon team are Kellen Brand (Appalachian State), Noah Dahlman (Wofford), Brandon Giles (Western Carolina), Harouna Mutombo (Western Carolina), Willie Powers (Georgia Southern), Junior Salters (Wofford), Cameron Wells (The Citadel) and Tony White Jr. (College of Charleston).
Davidson returns 10 letter winners and two starters from last year’s team, which posted a 27-8 record and made a postseason appearance for the fifth straight campaign, advancing to the NIT second round.
BUTLER GAME ON LOCAL TV
The Davidson men’s basketball game at Butler Nov. 14 will be televised live in the greater Charlotte Metropolitan region on WJZY-TV Channel 46. The channel is available through Time Warner Cable and MI-Connection. Jim Barbar, an ESPN commentator, will provide the play by play with former Bowling Green and Indiana University coach Dan Dakich providing the color commentary. Coverage begins at 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 26-6 campaign and a Horizon League championship season. Butler returns all five starters and is ranked 11th in the Associated Press Poll and No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
2 football players named academic all-district
Davidson football players Aaron Saltzman (Charleston, S.C.) and Peter Kidwell (Marshall, Va.) have been named first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III in a vote conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The duo will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America Honors.
Saltzman has 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in six games for the Wildcats. The senior defensive lineman has played in 22 career contests and recorded 36 hits, nine tackles for loss and three sacks. He carries a 3.49 grade point average and is majoring in political science.
Kidwell, who carries a 3.33 grade point average, has played in all eight games this season and started the last four. The sophomore defensive back leads the team with two interceptions and has recorded 38 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass break-up. He has played in 18 career contests and has 50 tackles.
